Welcome to the Malaria Project

The Malaria Project is a civic engagement, service learning initiative being conducted by two classes at Florida Gulf Coast University. Students in Foundations of Civic Engagement IDS 3300 and Integrated Core Senior Seminar IDS 4910 taught by adjunct instructor, Courtney Satkoski are working jointly to raise public awareness of the ongoing plight of individuals living in sub-Saharan Africa from mosquito vectored malaria. This preventable disease deprives those who live in afflicted areas of economic development, education, and health. To truly eradicate the disease all aspects of community life need to be addressed. But with proper use of inexpensive insecticide coated bed nets, the incidence of malaria can be dramatically reduced. These two classes are working together to not only raise awareness but to raise money to purchase nets to be delivered to villages in Nigeria.

The FGCU classes are working with various agencies and organizations to accomplish this effort. The Chicago based company, Clarke Mosquito Control’s foundation, Clarke Cares, has offered to match the money we raise dollar for dollar. So our goal of $20,000 becomes $40,000 which is enough to purchase and deliver 8,000 bed nets. Clarke Cares is working with Goodcity (a Chicago foundation) and the Atlanta based Carter Foundation to get the nets to Nigeria.

The FGCU classes are working to raise money by selling t-shirts and other items, through car washes, bake sales, a 5K race, and media events. Students from both classes will complete ten hours each of service learning for this project
